Man With A Mission's new music video "DIVE" is graded with DaVinci Resolve Studio

Fremont, CA - December 21, 2015 - Blackmagic Design today announced that DaVinci Resolve Studio was used for grading Man With A Mission’s new music video for the hit single “DIVE.” Motoki Tanaka, a colorist from Tokyo based post production company L’espace Vision, graded the video.

Man With A Mission is a popular Japanese rock band that has had four top 10 singles and four top five albums since its debut in 2012. The band’s hit single, “DIVE,” is the theme song for one of this year's most popular films, “Shinjuku Swan.” The video, composed of shots of Man With A Mission performing along with scenes involving the film’s lead actor, were shot in a cold concrete building, using strong light from multiple angles in a dark environment. Even though the atmosphere is dark, the movement of the camera and strong lights give the video a sense of speed, complementing the feeling of the song.

Tanaka said: “I created several different looks and let the director and the DP choose the best look from those options. The video is lit beautifully throughout, so I added some colors in the highlights and the black, and also added radiance to the highlights to show the lighting more effectively.

“For the actor's shots, I used DaVinci Resolve’s luminance to pick out highlights on the face, to provide a sharper look. Using luminance only allows me to extract a key as long as some light hits the face. I created shading on the face by extending or contracting the range of luminance.”

One of Tanaka’s favorite features in DaVinci Resolve is the ability to sort shots in the timeline in order of source timecode. “By rearranging the timeline using source timecode, I can see similar shots placed close together, such as a group of the band’s performance shots and a group of the actor's shots. It allowed me to proceed with grading more effectively.”

Tanaka also spoke about DaVinci Resolve’s development: “Resolve is capable of reading material from a huge range of cameras. It also allows ease of use, even though the material might be heavy. I used DaVinci's legacy control panel for a long time before I switched to the current advanced control surface. The control surface not only carries on its old model’s good points, but improves on them as well.”

“It is easier to grade just a single frame as you or your client would like. However, the tough part of grading is to keep the look consistent with other shots, and let each shot flow nicely with the others, which you have to do in limited time. I think it is one of reasons why clients turn to a colorist. It becomes harder to do if the edit is mixed with various camera footage. By grading with the control surface I can meet the demand of customers who want to get a high quality result within limited time, as I can grade more effectively and spend more time on creative aspects,” concluded Tanaka.
