India's The Ghazi Attack Film Graded on Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve
Fremont, CA - October 24, 2017 - Blackmagic Design today announced that B2H Studios Private Limited, an entertainment company focused on providing world-class services to the global cinema industry, graded ‘The Ghazi Attack’ on Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve. The decade old company has two coloring suites in Chennai & and one in Hyderabad (South India).
‘The Ghazi Attack’, India's first war-at-sea film, is an epic underwater tale of immense courage and undying patriotism. In 1971, a Pakistani submarine called the PNS Ghazi ventured into Indian waters with the ambition of destroying the INS Vikrant. Sailors aboard the Indian submarine S-21 stopped them in a war no one knew about.
“Color can affect us psychologically and physically, often without us being aware, and can be used as a strong story device. The DOP, Mr. Madhie, knew that composition, contrast and color were going to be important elements in communicating emotions to the audience,” explains Raghunath Varma, colorist for ‘The Ghazi Attack’.
“The greatest cinematographers of India, that we admire so much, know that nothing is accidental. ‘The Ghazi Attack’ was shot in 6K resolution and used distinctively different color schemes for the Pakistan and Indian Navy to personify their diverging ambitions. We tried pushing the visuals a little further by desaturating warmly to create soft contrasting colors with higher vibrancy much like a film from the 1960s,” says colorist and owner of B2H Studios Private Limited, Raghunath Varma. He continues, “This was all planned for in the pre-production phase.”
“Color is such a powerful part of cinema storytelling that we should always plan for it. Despite the power of modern color correction tools, like DaVinci Resolve, we should not leave color to chance or expect a highly effective color script in post. When the details of cinematography are plotted out, color adds a tremendous amount of storytelling power,” says Raghunath Varma, colorist of ‘The Ghazi Attack’. He continues, “Having worked with many industry leading color grading platforms, I’ve pretty much settled on only using DaVinci Resolve. I believe it’s the fastest and most intuitive grading software out there. With every new upgrade, I find new tools that help me to be even more efficient. Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve support / development teams respond very quickly to our requirements,” says Raghunath Varma, owner of two coloring suites. He continues, “I like 3D tracking, effecting mid-tone details, spatial NR, nodes, ResolveFX, remote grading, 3D qualifier and more. We deliver many films with big stars using DaVinci Resolve in India.”
