Blackmagic Design's 12G-SDI Product Line Wins 2015 SBE Technology Award

Fremont, CA - August 19, 2015 - Blackmagic Design today announced that its line of 12G-SDI products, including ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, Smart Videohub 12G 40x40, Teranex Mini and HyperDeck Studio 12G, has won the 2015 Society of Broadcast Engineers Technology Award.

The Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) is a nonprofit professional organization formed in 1964, and is the only organization devoted to the advancement of all levels and types of broadcast engineering. Each year, the organization recognizes the best in the industry through its chapter and individual awards. The SBE Technology Award recognizes an SBE Individual or Sustaining Member who has provided the industry with the best new or innovative technical item or idea to further the science of broadcast engineering and to assist the broadcast engineer to be more productive in the craft.

Blackmagic Design’s line of 12G-SDI products was chosen as this year’s Technology Award winner for its advanced 12G-SDI technology and the ability to do more for end users while simplifying workflows at the same time. Fast action production has required the use of high frame rates for many years, but while HD formats up to 1080p60 are very common, broadcasters cannot move to Ultra HD unless they can get the same high frame rate workflows they need. 12G-SDI carries massive data and allows for SD, HD and Ultra HD video to be sent down a single BNC cable, and will also support emerging formats like high frame rate Ultra HD 60p because of the increased bandwidth.

With 12G-SDI products like Blackmagic Design’s ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, Smart Videohub 12G 40x40, Teranex Mini and HyperDeck Studio 12G, broadcasters can get the high frame rates they need because they have all been designed from the ground up to support Ultra HD up to 2160p60. And with multi rate 12G-SDI connections, broadcasters can automatically switch to 6G-SDI, 3G-SDI and HD-SDI and are compatible with existing HD equipment, so they can master programs in 2160p60 while simultaneously outputting them in HD with realtime down conversion. In the end, with Ultra HD production at 60 frames per second, viewers will see incredibly clear, detailed images where every single frame looks like a super sharp still photograph.

Joe Snelson, CPBE, 8-VSB, president of the SBE, said, "The move to Ultra HD is on the way, and broadcast engineers are looking for high frame-rate tools to capture live events. The SBE congratulates Blackmagic Design on its innovation in developing this practical solution."

The award will be presented during the SBE National Awards Dinner on October 14, at the SBE National Meeting in Madison, WI. The National Meeting is being held in conjunction with the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Broadcasters Clinic.
